Alexandre Desplat won’t have to worry about competing against himself at the Oscars this year in the original score category.
Desplat won Academy Awards for his work on Anderson’s “Grand Budapest Hotel” and del Toro’s “Shape of Water.”
"Nightmare Alley" will be in theaters on Dec. 17. The cast also includes Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Richard Jenkins, Rob Perlman, Rooney Mara, Holt McCallany, Tim Blake Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, David Strathairn and Clifton Collins Jr. Based on William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name, “Nightmare Alley” stars Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper.
The two-time Oscar-winning composer is a favorite to pick up a nom for his work on Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch.” He was also set to provide the music for Guillermo del Toro's “Nightmare Alley,” but he’s had to back out of the noir thriller because of scheduling. After production on “Nightmare Alley” was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm told Desplat and del Toro were not able to meet in France to work on the score.
It will be release in U.S. theaters on Oct. A London premiere this coming weekend will include actors Rupert Friend and Stephen Park. Anderson, Desplat as well as cast members Lea Seydoux and Lyna Khoudri are expected to attend a Paris premiere on Oct 24. 22.

Most recently, the Searchlight Pictures film screened at the New York Film Festival with virtual appearances by Anderson and stars Bill Murray, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman from the set of the director’s next movie in Spain. “The French Dispatch” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation.
They're still set to reunite for the director’s “Pinocchio.” “Knives Out” composer Nathan Johnson has now been brought in for “Nightmare Alley.” But all is well between del Toro and Desplat.

Palek spent eight years at ITV America; at Leftfield Pictures, she oversaw development and production across the label’s slate, including series such as "Alone and Pawn Stars" (History), "30 for 30: Year of the Scab" (ESPN), "Brain Surgery Live" (NatGeo), and the upcoming "Table Wars with Martha Stewart" (HGTV), as series for Peacock and Hulu. Prior to joining ITV, Palek was a casting and talent executive at Discovery Channel. Before Leftfield, she was senior VP of casting and talent for ITV America, earning multiple Emmy Awards for casting Netflix's "Queer Eye," and other projects.
Palek shifts over from ITV America, where she was most recently co-president of the company's Leftfield Pictures. Blumhouse TV has tapped Gretchen Palek to oversee its expansion in unscripted TV as head of alternative.
"With our new unscripted pact, Gretchen can hit the ground running, leading the stellar Alternative team at Blumhouse into an exciting new chapter while continuing to collaborate with the group at ITV America, where she’s been a respected creative. McCumber and ITV America CEO David George announced Palek's shift in a joint statement: "This is one of those rare scenarios where the planets just aligned," they said in a shared quote that both approved for the press release. It’s a seamless transition for all of us."
Palek's transition comes following Blumhouse TV's deal with ITV America to jointly create nonfiction content — with Blumhouse's suspense-driven brand — under an exclusive overall deal. That means Palek will continue to collaborate with her former ITV America colleagues, but now over at Blumhouse.
She will be charged with creating a new slate of non-fiction genres and formats utilizing the Blumhouse brand. Palek will report to Blumhouse TV president Chris McCumber.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity to launch a creative endeavor with the incredible minds at Blumhouse, leaning into a style of storytelling I’m passionate about and working with insanely talented people, including my friends at ITV America," Palek said. "I look forward to jumping in at Blumhouse and to the work ahead with Chris and the entire team.”” />

Julie Cohen and Betsy West could also make a bit of history if they're nominated for both "My Name is Pauli Murray" and "Julia." Lots more to come down the pike. It could even factor into the best picture conversation. At the top is the animated, international and documentary feature "Flee," which would make history if it cracked all three of those respective lineups. AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY: As can be expected, we should see another large number of documentaries in the running for Oscar recognition. Adele, the 15-time Grammy winner with over 120 million records sold globally, had her first sit-down interview in five years with Vogue, to discuss her fourth studio album, "30," her divorce and inevitable return to the spotlight.
But the article describes her as being "done with lambasting her exes in her lyrics," quoting the singer as saying, “I have to really address myself now.”
I really want people to hear my side of the story this time.” Ultimately, Adele says "30" contains a rollercoaster of emotion: “I feel like this album is self-destruction, then self-reflection and then sort of self-redemption. But I feel ready.
The star explained what she hopes for in “30": "With this one, I made the very conscious decision to be like, for the first time in my life, actually, ‘What do I want?’”
It’d be so awkward. I think a lot of women are going to be like, ‘I’m done.’” “Can you imagine couples listening to it in the car? Adele married the businessman in 2018 when she was 30 — the titular name of the album — and said the record will encourage those lost in a relationship to move on.
The star, who had her last significant interview in 2016, said, "I have to sort of gear myself up to be famous again, which, famously, I don’t really like being.”
No song titles from the forthcoming album are revealed in the interview, although the writer, who heard four of the tracks, describes the record's closing number as "a seven-minute opus" that is "a string-swirling, Garland-invoking, jazzy, campy, swooning delight, packed with world-weary end-of-the-show reflection, and featuring a vocal for the ages."
There are no featured guests on the record. What she wanted, in part, was to resume working with Greg Kurstin, who paired famously well with her on "25," and Max Martin, Inflo (known for his work with Sault) and Swedish composer and producer Ludwig Göransson, who won an Academy Award for his “Black Panther” score and has worked closely with Childish Gambino.
Really good questions, really innocent questions, that I just don’t have an answer for … And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.” I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness. (like) why can't you still live together?… In the past five years, the “Hello” star has been raising her son Angelo and gotten married and divorced to her now ex-husband, Simon Konecki. “My son has had a lot of questions. It made him really unhappy sometimes. Adele said the new album explains her life changes, but is ultimately a letter to her now 9-year-old son.
