Univision Communications' Gizmodo Media Group, which includes websites Gizmodo, Deadspin and Jezebel, has hired former Vocativ editor-in-chief Ben Reininga as head of video.
Gizmodo Media Group has been starring up video producers for each site, and the video expansion comes as it has launched new sites focused on the environment (Earther), esports (Compete), and parenting (Offspring).
Before Vocativ, he was deputy editor at Refinery29 and previously spent two years as editorial director of NowThis. Previously, Reininga oversaw Vocativ's newsroom of video producers, editors, and writers and worked with the production company that created Vocativ's series for Showtime, "Dark Net." He left Vocativ amid a sizable layoff this summer, after which he worked on projects as a consultant for NowThis, Mashable and others. He earlier worked at Huffington Post and Nerve.com.
With Reininga's hire, GMG expects to ramp up its video production, but a company rep insisted that the strategy does not represent a "pivot to video" at the expense of other editorial content. Gizmodo Media had a small video team before Univision's acquisition of the six properties last year, but video had not previously been a focus for the sites.
Univision's purchase of the Gawker Media assets in a bankruptcy auction hasn't resulted in significant revenue growth at this point. For the first nine month of 2017 core digital ad sales were $95.6 million, up 2.9% year over year on a pro-forma basis. In reporting third-quarter 2017 results, Univision said core digital advertising revenue for the period was $34.4 million, down 0.3% year over year on a pro-forma basis.
Banikarim joined the company in September. Reininga reports to Susie Banikarim, editorial director of Gizmodo Media Group, who worked with him when she was Vocativ's chief content officer.
GMG is part of Fusion Media Group's digital network, along with the Onion, The A.V. Currently, Gizmodo Media’s portfolio of sites includes Deadspin, Earther, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Lifehacker, the Root, and Splinter. The move shows AT&T trying to press forward as if the merger will take place, though this week the DOJ met with AT&T officials and told them they needed to divest Time Warner's Turner Networks, which include CNN, Turner Classic Movies, and TBS, for the deal to proceed, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.
The company at the time hired Brian Lesser, the chief executive of the North American operations of WPP’s large GroupM consortium of media-buying agencies, to serve as chief executive of the new unit. Lesser will report directly to AT&T Chairman and Chief Executive Randall Stephenson, and is charged with building and leading “an advertising and analytics business using the company’s unique customer data and growing content assets.”

Animations (WBA) has named Audrey Diehl as the new vice president of series, the studio announced Thursday. Warner Bros.
WBA is currently producing 13 series, including "Justice League Action," "Teen Titans Go!" and the upcoming "DC Super Hero Girls." The studio is also producing the "Young Justice: Outsiders" for the upcoming DC-branded digital service.
Since October 2013, Diehl served as vice president of animation development, where she managed the network’s slate of development projects in a variety of genres for the kids 6–11 audience. Diehl comes to WBA after more than 14 years at Nickelodeon. In this capacity, she headed the development team and oversaw pre-production and production of a large slate of animated pilots, including the upcoming series "Pinky Malinky." She joined Nickelodeon in 2003 and held a series of positions in both current series and development. During her tenure at Nickelodeon, Diehl developed a number of series, including "Sanjay & Craig," "Harvey Beaks," and "Pig Goat Banana Cricket." She also worked as creative executive on "El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera," "Fanboy & Chum Chum," and "The Penguins of Madagascar," among others.

Its "Happy Death Day," released Oct. 13, is nearing $80 million worldwide. Universal has seen several box office successes this year for low-cost Blumhouse horror titles with "Split" taking in $280 million worldwide and "Get Out" pulling in $250 million.

Universal Studios has set Blumhouse's supernatural thriller "Truth or Dare," starring Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey, for an April 27 release.
Blumhouse broke out with the "Paranormal Activity" franchise and went on to produce the "Purge" and "Insidious" franchises. Its other 2018 titles include "Insidious: The Last Key," "The Purge: The Island," and the reboot of "Halloween," starring Jamie Lee Curtis.
The story centers on a harmless game of "Truth or Dare" among friends that turns deadly when someone — or something — begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.
Hale is best known for her role in "Pretty Little Liars." Posey stars in "Teen Wolf."

Miller first began playing Captain Cold in 2014 on "The Flash," appearing in multiple episodes before becoming a regular on "Legends of Tomorrow," the latter of which also starring fellow "Prison Break" alum Dominic Purcell. Colligan notified Viacom, Paramount's parent company, and the studio's human resources department of her claims in a notice of resignation.
"We are not aware of any lawsuit having been filed and do not discuss personnel matters, so we have to decline to comment," said Chris Petrikin, a spokesman for Paramount.
"I can tell you Megan isn't the only person within Paramount's senior executive women who I have spoken to about gender discrimination," said Freedman. "It's not one person claiming something. It exists systemically."
"We intend to pursue this legal claim until this systemic problem is remedied," he added.” />
"There's been a systemic culture within Paramount," said Bryan Freedman, an attorney for Colligan, in an interview with Variety.
Despite the exit of Colligan and other female executives, a source close to the situation points out that Paramount has tapped Mireille Soria to run animation, promoted Elizabeth Raposo to president of production, and upped Syrinthia Studer to head of acquisitions since Gianopulos has taken over the studio.
Megan Colligan is pursuing legal action against Paramount Pictures, alleging that gender bias and discrimination are behind her exit as head of worldwide distribution and marketing.
September Rae, an associate of Freedman's, added, "Generally women were treated unequally and roles and responsibilities were taken away from them and provided to other people."
Paramount has been struggling with a wave of box office flops over the past year and a half. In September, Gianopulos ousted Marc Evans, the motion picture group president, and replaced him with Wyck Godfrey, the producer of "The Fault in Our Stars" and "Twilight." Colligan isn't the only executive to be forced out. "Transformers: The Last Knight" disappointed commercially, while the likes of "Baywatch," "Suburbicon," and "Mother!" all were rejected by audiences.
He would not name two of the women, but cited the exits of Amy Mastriona, EVP of creative advertising, and Alicia Wilde, SVP of regional publicity, as evidence of the trend. Freedman said that four female executives have departed in recent months. Freedman said that Colligan believes the discrimination against female employees began when Brad Grey was replaced last spring as studio chief by Jim Gianopulos.

The ACLU has since published the letter, claiming in a letter of their own that copyright law does not apply because "this is not a commercial use, and there is no market for this letter, in part because it is tied to the facts of this specific case."

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is challenging lawsuit threats made by Taylor Swift and her lawyer against a Northern California blogger.
"This is a completely unsupported attempt to suppress constitutionally protected speech,” said ACLU of Northern California attorney Michael Risher.
The letter takes subtle jabs at some of Swift's lyrics, saying that "criticism is never pleasant, but a celebrity has to shake it off, even if the critique may damage her reputation," and that "applying these fundamental constitutional principles to your four 'hideous falsehoods' shows that not even in your wildest dreams can they constitute defamation."

In the old days, we’d need at least 10 or 12 movies a year from the independent market. A few U.S. Today we buy whatever we can get for a [reasonable] price, and if we don’t, there’s not much harm to us. titles perform substantially, or over-perform, but the vast majority don’t do as well as they did in the past. We at Constantin have upped our domestic German-language production heavily over the last 10 years.
What’s your experience been as a buyer at the markets?
What effect are Netflix and Amazon having on the marketplace?
What’s the state of the international theatrical marketplace right now?
It’s just gotten more complicated, because there’s more product out there and it’s harder to get movies cast. There are only a few “must-have titles” that everybody agrees are fantastic, which is not different than it was 10 or 20 years ago. At least in Germany, I’ve seen distributors give back movies because some of the elements didn’t come through. And over the last three years or so, there are lots of films geared towards Asia that don’t necessarily work well in Western Europe. We see that all the time now: movies are sold with a certain cast and then people drop out.
With one movie we bought recently, we were trying to push [the U.S. That wasn’t an expensive film, but if you buy a big movie for $5-8 million, you need this huge P&A push out of the U.S. It doesn’t make sense for all the distributors who put up a lot of money. that has a worldwide footprint in order for the movie to perform theatrically. It was impossible to get them to it. distributor] to do an Academy run in December, because it would make total sense to have it out in February or March around the Academy Awards. Without such a push, the movie’s going to be extremely difficult to market in our territory.

“Heroes” was the theme organizers picked for the 51st edition of Europe’s biggest comics and games meet (Nov. 1-5), which is dedicated first and foremost to the increasing onslaught of fans, some arriving from as far as the U.S., Japan and Australia.
The company approached Lucca several years ago to start its film section, which has rapidly become an integral part of the Hollywood studios promotional push into Europe. “It’s increasingly becoming a global platform to launch content,” says Giovanni Cova, head of Milan-based entertainment marketing company QMI.
But while Lucca’s appeal is nothing new, the novelty this year is that Netflix is at the event in force.

Twentieth Century Fox chairman and CEO Stacey Snider sent an email to the brothers on Monday saying that the studio was walking away from the deal and ceasing negotiations, according to a person familiar with the correspondence. She closed by noting that if there were individual projects that made sense for Fox, "the door to the studio was wide open." She went on to say that she wished the Russos the best in building their company and was looking forward to seeing the movies they made.

The source said there were issues related to the structure of the deal, with Fox coming to believe that it would be asked to shoulder too much of the financial risks associated with the projects. A source close to the negotiations said that the Russos were looking for richer financial terms than the ones the studio offers to top directors such as James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. Twentieth Century Fox is backing out of a planned deal to co-finance and distribute film and television projects from Joe and Anthony Russo, Variety has learned. The brothers had a hand-shake agreement with Fox, but the two sides were unable to come together on final terms when they were negotiating on the long-form of the deal.

The coming weeks, meanwhile, look poised to put box office on the rise. Broadway's fall lineup has begun to kick into high gear — one buzzy new title, "Meteor Shower" with Amy Schumer, starts previews this week — and Thanksgiving, one of Broadway's most profitable weeks, is right around the corner.
And some productions managed to hold steady, despite the overall downward trend — most notably "The Band's Visit" ($872,688), which is maintaining the momentum it's been building since Off Broadway's critical fave began Broadway previews earlier this month. Most individual shows still posted declines, but the overall picture, compared to the same week in previous years, looked pretty good.
Halloween weekend is usually pretty frightful at the Broadway box office, what with all the costumes parties and trick-or-treating that keep theatergoers — particularly family audiences — from showing up for a show. But with All Hallow's Eve falling on a Tuesday this year, festivities were spread across the weekend and early into this week — which meant the damage last week wasn't so bad, compared to prior years.
Overall Broadway sales slipped about $2 million to $28.6 million for 28 shows, with attendance down 13,000 to 231,168. That's a pretty strong showing, compared to prior years, with grosses pumped by high average ticket prices at shows like "Springsteen on Broadway" ($502 a pop, adding up to $2,383,080 for the week), "Hamilton" ($248, with $2,665,092 for the week) and "Hello, Dolly!" ($206 and $2,362,351).

"'Thor: Ragnarok' is a goofy, kitschy- but- fun romp and the most purely entertaining of the three Thor movies, marked by its distinctive designs, '80s synth score, and assemblage of spirited characters. But it’s also a film fragmented by its clear preference for its B storyline (Sakaar) over its A storyline (Asgard). 'Thor: Ragnarok's' desire to go for the gag also hurts the movie in a few key serious moments that deserved to pack more punch than they did." It’s carried by the excellent chemistry between Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie, who give humanity to a visual effects-heavy spectacle that finally makes good on Thor’s title of God of Thunder.
Loosely borrowing from the Norse doomsday myth, "Thor: Ragnarok" finds the hero banished to a distant planet and forced to fight gladiator battles against his "friend from work," the Hulk, essentially giving fans a "planet Hulk" movie despite Marvel repeatedly denying that fans would see the popular storyline in a film. At the same time, the thunder god must try to return to his home world of Asgard to prevent the goddess of death, Hela, from destroying his home and killing everyone in it.
"Like Thor’s two previous solo outings, this one is pretty much skippable, although it’s not without its pleasures — most notably, the fact that Thor’s not so solo this time around, with cameos/co-starring opportunities for the Hulk, Doctor Strange and a few leftover bits of Tony Stark’s wardrobe (including a retro Duran Duran T-shirt that’s good for a laugh). And while it’s not saying much, 'Thor: Ragnarok' is easily the best of the three Thor movies — or maybe I just think so because its screenwriters and I finally seem to agree on one thing: The Thor movies are preposterous…Irreverent almost to the point of camp, that approach fits comfortably within the wheelhouse of Kiwi director Taika Waititi."

Things lightened up considerably as Lionel Richie, introducing Bryan, indulged in some shtick about how his Gucci boots stood in the way of entertaining any of Bryan’s entreaties to join him in hunting and fishing (the "loving" part of Bryan’s hit "Huntin', Fishin' and Lovin' Every Day" smash went unmentioned).
At the Artists of the Year event, there’s no stress over failed nominations, drink service at the tables, and, best of all, as far as some participants are confirmed, the whole thing is over in a brisk 90 minutes. The Schermerhorn is also a superior location for an awards show, even if its small capacity doesn’t leave much room for servicing screaming fans. LYON, France — The Lumière Film Festival’s International Classic Film Market put the spotlight on conservation and restoration of classic animated films on Wednesday, offering an examination of both the challenges and opportunities for cinematheques, private companies and other rights holders.
The scenes presented at the International Classic Film Market marked the first time they had been shown since McClaren cut them out in 1945. As for “Hen Hop,” the original version disappeared in 1945 but the Cinémathèque rediscovered parts of the drawn-on-film animated short that had been cut.
